Ambisonics

Composed during the ambisonics course Nord+MIX in Vilnius.

This piece is composed in Ambisonics, with the intention of incorperating the spatialisation in the actual synthesis. Technically, this means that I use a SynthDef in SuperCollider that has spatialisation parameters, allowing me to sequence not only pitches and timbre but also spatial movement. This was partly a practical thing—I didn’t want to have to manually automate the panning in REAPER. But there is also an aesthetic intention, where each note is independent in its movement. Sequencing the spatialisation was also a way of introducing chance operations in the spatialisation, with the intention of moving away from the traditional acousmatic aesthetic of “grand gestures”.
